![]() You'll be glad you did. This section of help is designed for the TOTAL newbie. If you're looking for a simple yet addictive game which doesn't need flashy graphics or a fully licensed soundtrack to make an impression, then give ZZT a free download. Stick with the arrow keys.įifteen years after its release, ZZT is still a challenging and engrossing experience. In practice, I found that the mouse is too imprecise to be of much use. You can also control Smiley (for want of a better name) with a mouse or a joystick. Holding down the Shift key fires a 'bullet' (really the letter 'o') in that direction. Your aforementioned smiley-face guy can move in all directions using the arrow keys. It's about the gameplay, and here's where ZZT scores all its points. But it's not about the graphics or sound. The sound consists of internal speaker bleeps. The enemies consist of various ASCII characters (after this, you'll never look at the 'pi' symbol the same way again). Your character is a white smiley-face symbol. They don't need flashy graphics either - ZZT is comprised entirely of ASCII art. There isn't any story in any of the pre-made ZZT worlds ("guy gets trapped in dungeon" isn't a story), but they don't need one. ZZT probably didn't invent the concept of sharing levels over the internet, but it certainly made good use of it. ![]() The game also comes with an easy-to-use editor that allows you to make your own worlds. From the opening screen, you can choose to start in a number of different "worlds" - essentially, different game environments. Or any version of Windows, for that matter. It's a DOS game, but it can run in a Windows XP environment. Now officially released as freeware, ZZT can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection and five minutes to spare. But it's easy to enjoy it, purely because of the fact that it's still playable and enjoyable. By MisterHarryZ | Review Date: OctoIt's tricky to review a game like ZZT, purely because it seems wildly out of date compared to today's blockbusters. ![]()
